Sights & Landmarks

Sights in Minato

Minato is home to some of Tokyo's most recognizable landmarks. Tokyo Tower stands tall as the district's historic icon. At its base lies Zojoji Temple, founded in 1393, offering a classic visual contrast between the traditional temple gates and the modern red-and-white tower. Nearby, Shiba Park provides a spacious green retreat perfect for picnics and capturing scenic photos of the tower.

Modern developments continue to reshape the skyline. Azabudai Hills, opened on November 24, 2023, is a flagship Mori Building redevelopment featuring Japan's tallest building, the Mori JP Tower (approximately 330 meters). This "Green & Wellness" themed complex houses the teamLab Borderless digital art museum, galleries, boutiques, and 24,000 square meters of green space planted with 11 types of fruit trees, including blueberries, figs, and peaches. Nearby, TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY is scheduled for its grand opening on March 28, 2026, introducing the "MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives" and the grand "Tokyo Aqua Symphony" water fountain show.

Art and entertainment thrive in Roppongi, known for its "Art Triangle" which includes Roppongi Hills (featuring the Mori Art Museum and Tokyo City View observatory) and the National Art Center, Tokyo. Over at Toranomon Hills, the TOKYO NODE gallery frequently hosts major digital art and intellectual property exhibitions. For waterfront views, the Odaiba area on the Minato side offers Odaiba Seaside Park, where visitors can stroll along the beach, view the Rainbow Bridge and a replica of the Statue of Liberty, and look out toward Mount Fuji at sunset.

Shopping

Shopping in Minato

Shopping in Minato ranges from charming local streets to ultra-modern luxury malls. Azabu-Juban Shotengai is a traditional neighborhood shopping street where historic, generations-old shops stand alongside trendy modern boutiques. It is an ideal spot for monthly residents to pick up daily essentials while enjoying a relaxed afternoon walk.

For high-end fashion, design goods, and premium supermarkets, Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown offer extensive upscale retail options. Meanwhile, the newly opened Azabudai Hills features a massive specialty food market alongside curated boutique stores. If you prefer shopping by the water, AQUA CiTY ODAIBA is a large seaside mall that provides excellent views of the Rainbow Bridge alongside its diverse retail offerings.

Food & Dining

Food and dining in Minato

The culinary scene in Minato is incredibly diverse and international. The Roppongi and Nishi-Azabu neighborhoods boast some of the highest densities of international dining in Tokyo, ranging from Michelin-starred establishments to late-night local diners. Due to the high concentration of foreign embassies in the area, residents can easily find highly authentic global cuisines here.

In contrast, Azabu-Juban offers a delightful mix of old and new, where historic taiyaki (fish-shaped waffle filled with sweet red bean) shops and traditional soba noodle restaurants share the streets with contemporary cafes. For those seeking a lively, local atmosphere, Shimbashi is Tokyo's legendary hub for office workers. The area under the elevated train tracks is packed with smoky yakitori stalls and standing bars, offering a vibrant glimpse into Tokyo's everyday food culture.

Additionally, the modern food halls and markets inside Azabudai Hills and Toranomon Hills bring together famous restaurants and specialty food purveyors from all across Japan, making high-quality dining highly accessible.

Getting Around

Getting around Minato

Minato boasts exceptional connectivity, making it easy to navigate the city. The Yamanote Line runs directly through the district, stopping at key stations including Shinagawa (a major Shinkansen and airport transit hub located within Minato), Takanawa Gateway, Tamachi, Hamamatsucho, and Shimbashi. From Hamamatsucho Station, the Tokyo Monorail provides a direct connection to Haneda Airport, while the Keikyu Line from Shinagawa Station offers another direct route to the airport.

For scenic transit, the driverless Yurikamome Line runs from Shimbashi Station across the Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba. A comprehensive network of subway lines—including the Ginza, Hibiya, Namboku, Oedo, Asakusa, and Mita lines—crisscrosses the district, seamlessly connecting residential areas like Roppongi, Azabu-Juban, and Akasaka.

While the topography of Minato features numerous slopes, particularly around the Azabu and Akasaka neighborhoods, the high density of subway stations ensures that a transit connection is almost always within a 10-minute walk.

Events & Seasonal Highlights

Events and seasonal highlights in Minato

Each season brings unique experiences to Minato. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom beautifully around Shiba Park, the Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens, and Aoyama Cemetery. Summer is the perfect time for evening strolls along the beach at Odaiba Seaside Park to catch the sunset.

Autumn 2026 will bring the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival, co-hosted by Chuo and Minato wards to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Chuo Ward's founding. Approximately 12,200 fireworks will be launched from barges off the Harumi pier, illuminating the Tokyo Bay skyline. This marks the first time the festival will be held in autumn, with official dates to be announced.

As winter approaches, the district lights up with spectacular illuminations. The Keyakizaka illumination at Roppongi Hills features sparkling lights with Tokyo Tower glowing in the background from November until Christmas, while Tokyo Midtown hosts its own famous light displays. At Zojoji Temple, visitors can experience the traditional ringing of the New Year's Eve bells (Joya no Kane) and New Year prayers (Hatsumode), while Tokyo Tower features themed light-ups throughout the year.

For those planning a mid-to-long-term stay in Tokyo, finding a comfortable home base is key to enjoying these seasonal events and local neighborhoods.
